Writing Snacks got a kick out of our intervew this month with Sarah C. Campbell.

She is an award-winning author who creates nonfiction picture books for young readers. Sarah and her husband, Richard, illustrate the books with larger-than-life color photographs. Sarah also teaches photography and writing in a variety of settings, from K-12 classrooms to writers' workshops to professional development.


Her latest book Growing Patterns goes on sale March 1.

Snacks: You have done such an amazing job marrying two of your passions:
writing and photography. Tell us a little about how that came to be.

 

Sarah: I have been taking pictures since I was a teenager. My mother is a photographer and, when I was in high school, she taught me to shoot black and white film, develop it, and print the photographs. I spent many hours in a closet modified into a darkroom. I studied journalism in college and I got mixed messages from faculty about the wisdom of displaying to editors a skill for both photography and writing. At newspapers at the time, the duties were very clearly divided between photo departments and news departments. I understand why this is the case. It is very difficult to report and to photograph breaking news at the same time. However, as I moved into freelancing I came to understand that editors who are acquiring content are very happy to do one-stop shopping – if the quality is high for both writing and photography. Dana:  Shh! That's a secret. 
Melissa:  Did you stick your gum under the table when you were six?
Dana:  What's with the questions?
Melissa:  You're a character. So I'm asking you quesitons.
Dana:  I'm a writer—a real one!

Characterization: Does Riley snort or snicker? Would Olivia visit the psychic down the street or more likely toilet paper her pecan trees? Does Mario wear socks that don't match? If you get stuck trying to get those details just right for your character, try Coke or Pepsi?
